WARNING – 3D Video Games

Video games are very popular with young children, and we as parents should really monitor how much time is spent playing games.  However, of particular importance are the new 3D video games.  Can 3D games hurt your children’s eyes?

According to the American Academy of Opthamology, there really is no research yet that suggests 3D video games harm eye development, however, kids can experience the same discomfort that some adults do while watching 3D entertainment; such as eye fatigue, nausea or dizziness.  Seeing the world in three dimensions is a complex process that requires healthy eyes, good eyesight and the brain’s ability to process images correctly.  If your child experiences the reactions listed above, you should discuss it with the family doctor because they could indicate other underlying problems.

It is recommended that you have your children practice the “20-20-20” rule.  That is, every 20 minutes, take at least a 20 second break to look at something 20 feet away.  It is not so much the idea of limiting the total time of activity, but rather taking a short break to allow the eye muscles to rest and recover.
